Are you looking for a delicious and nutritious drink to add to your daily routine? Look no further than golden milk! This traditional Ayurvedic beverage has been enjoyed for centuries due to its numerous health benefits. I drink it all the time - in the afternoon, in the morning, before bed...it has a wonderful all-day applicability. Most people add sugar to it, but for me, a squeeze of honey usually works. Sugar ruins the wholesome taste of golden milk. I'm going to be showing you the perfect recipe for golden milk that you can easily make at home.
What is Golden Milk?
Golden milk, also known as turmeric milk, is a warm beverage made with milk, turmeric, and other spices. Turmeric, the key ingredient, contains curcumin, a compound known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. When combined with other spices like cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper, golden milk becomes a powerful elixir for overall well-being. Technically, it's a herbal tea, because it does not have any " real " tea in it.
Ingredients for the Perfect Golden Milk
To make the perfect golden milk, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 cup of milk (dairy or plant-based)
- 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- A pinch of ground ginger
- A pinch of black pepper
- 1 teaspoon of honey or maple syrup (optional)
How to Make Golden Milk
1. In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it is warm but not boiling.
2. Add the turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper to the milk. Stir well to combine the spices.
3. Continue to heat the mixture for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavours to meld together.
4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and strain the golden milk to remove any spice residue.
5. Sweeten with honey or maple syrup if desired.
6. Pour the golden milk into a cup and enjoy it warm.
Benefits of Golden Milk
Drinking golden milk regularly can have numerous health benefits, including reducing inflammation, boosting immunity, improving digestion, and promoting better sleep. The combination of turmeric and other spices creates a soothing and nourishing drink that can be enjoyed any time of day.
Add some cardamom and rose in for optimal taste. I usually brew up a whole batch and then store it for reheating. I also whisk it into cake batters and pancakes. You can also put it into coffee, which makes an invigorating spicy coffee.
If you want to spruce it up a bit, just put in more honey, and crush almonds on it.
